Shane Barney

Chief Information Security Officer, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Shane Barney is a trailblazer in cybersecurity as the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS). He leaned in to automation early and developed an entire SOC of threat hunters to create a brand new cyber strategy instead of focusing on a rigid compliance mindset and is working to develop a more “fluid” compliance framework that meets compliance requirements while maintaining the ability to adapt to the rapidly changing nature of automated machine learning.

Responsible for protecting USCIS networks, systems, and information, Shane ensures their confidentiality, integrity, and availability. With his fire for innovation, Shane has elevated the agency’s information security programs to combat both internal and external threats. He leaned in to AI early and started deploying machine learning coupled with automation before it was popular. He brought in developer teams to figure out that automating parts of his systems could expand his capabilities to more than double his capabilities.

His burning passion for safeguarding critical systems continues to set new standards in federal cybersecurity.
