Elizabeth Cappello

Deputy Chief Information Officer, Department of Homeland Security

Beginning her federal service as a U.S. Marine and now with over 30 years of government leadership and management expertise, Beth Cappello is one of our shining stars — making her own unique, invaluable contribution to advance the mission of keeping America safer from myriad threats. As Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the Department of Homeland Security, Cappello is responsible for managing the department’s information technology infrastructure and security, leading the team with authoritative decision-making and expert insight.

Her exceptional executive stewardship during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in little to no disruption to the field or staff operators’ daily activities as workers were sent home under extraordinary circumstances. Her conscientious attention to detail, passion, understanding and commitment in service to the DHS mission set truly set her above the rest of the field!

Prior to her role at OCIO, Cappello served as the Acting CIO and Deputy CIO for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), leading several large technology initiatives, including Data Center 1 migration to the cloud and the retirement of legacy mainframe dependency. She also oversaw the deployment of Microsoft Office 365 and led Security Operations Center optimization efforts, including a highly successful Defense Information Systems Agency assessment.
